Journaling Through The Pain
Today is the anniversary of Maxx’s death. 6 years ago today … my time flies. I miss my little Maxx, his sweet innocence and love for the camera, his clumsiness, his push to be #1 – which he was completely after Byron’s death. He was my little Maxx…I miss him and hope he is watching over me – being an angel to me … he was a little love.
However, despite the day for remembrance to a special companion, I realize some people are struggling with aging and anger. When I hear this I wonder… as we age, why are we angry? Who are we angry at? Are we angry at someone else or really angry at ourselves? Are we angry about life and that it didn’t turn out the way we thought it should? Some envy others good fortune, even if secretly. Yet some so angry don’t see the potential in themselves to do something from this point forward. Thankfully, some do.
Some are caregivers, others are rescuers… caught in a web of self truth that belies their life. Yet all have the answer deep inside, yet they are too burdened with anger to take the journey within… because of the pain they will encounter before they move to healing their spirit. I cannot take on their energy but can hold them in the light hoping my touch, my words, or my very presence will ease the pain – if maybe for only the time we are sitting together. I realize that by listening, I must move on to capture my own essence before my light is extinguished. I must use my light and spread my words to those who seek me out.
As we approach the coming year, more chaos will create more static … we will be another year older and probably have more anger and hate in the world. I can only live in the light as the light provides for me with love and all my needs for life. Whatever I ask for I receive because the Universe provides for those in the light. Well, maybe the Universe provides for all, regardless… however, I will remain in the light because of my love and belief in my own god-spirit. Each of you, I hope are journaling daily, journaling through the pain… finding the light and realizing you know the answers are inside of you.
In the Spirit of Love and Light…
Warmly,
Rosemary Augustine

My Secret Garden
Today I want to paint, sing and run for joy because it’s a free day. A free pass to explore the creativity that awaits me. We need 365 days of free passes – since everyday should be a free day to write, spark, and create. It’s part of life’s balance.
Today I take my free pass to a pleasure garden filled with colorful flowers and green grass. Blue sky, warm breezes, hills to run down, streams to dip my toes in. A chance to sit and gaze into the beauty that surrounds me. It is a warm yet comfortable day with a few bees pollinating the flowers and a big black and white cat snoozing on the sun lit wicker chair. It feels like an August afternoon. The colors all around me fill my palette. As I sit and daze off into this beauty, I gaze deeply into my soul nourishing every inch, recognizing how every space is filled with the beauty that surrounds me. I take this moment and breathe in all the beauty. My breath is rhythmic. I feel the sun’s rays on my face as I am still for what should be an eternity, but I’m sure is only for a few minutes. My mind is quiet, no thoughts are racing through my mind.
There is a stillness, an inner joy that I have created by just being here. It is the closest thing to peace – inner peace that anyone could imagine. It is my oasis in the desert, my inner spring, my secret garden created today with my imagination. I can go there any time to sit and be still, to be with myself, to recharge after the storm. I can only go by myself since this is all in my imagination. A quiet place that welcomes me each time with open arms filled with love.
Find your oasis in the storm of life. Find where you can go to be still, quiet, safe with your thoughts. A place where you can nourish your soul. It may only be for a few minutes, but the treasures you receive last as long as your next visit. Enjoy!
Warmest Regards,
Rosemary Augustine
PS… Yes, It’s been a while since my last post. However, don’t let that discourage you. Just like everyone else, life happens. What’s most important is when we get distracted, we come back to what makes us whole, nourished and one with the Gods! This piece was written a few weeks ago when the ground had 8 inches of new snow and it was 10 degrees at 7 am. Just a few weeks later it was 70 degrees and felt like a warm day in May. It’s only February! By the time this was posted… it was back to more snow and 20 degrees. Ah! Winter! Soon everything around us will be blooming. Soon! The picture insert is Chanticleer – my secret garden that is real – right here in Wayne, PA.
When You’re Feeling Blah!
Today, I came home feeling the January Blues… bitter cold, snow on the ground for weeks and feeling pulled in lots of directions. So it goes – Blah! Blah! Blah! As I put the key in my door, I said to myself, “I need to journal on all that I am grateful for – right now!”
I am grateful for coming home to see my kitties, since regardless of whether they are happy to see me, I am very happy to see them. Do I think they are lucky to have me in their life? Hell No! I’m the lucky one. Let’s see, the gratitude list was endless, yet I’ll only write a few here. I’m grateful to dance to my favorite song. I am very grateful for all my friends and their loving support. Despite the bitter temperatures, I’m grateful that I’m warm right now because others may not be. And, I’m grateful for my good health, since so many people around me are sick.
As I wrote, I saw my words take shape: Gratitude is an attitude adjustment – just look at the spelling: GR Attitude… looks like Great Attitude to me! So when we have those moments, and oh yes, we all get them… have an attitude adjustment. Count your blessings and recognize ALL that you are Grateful for today and everyday! Those January Blues quickly faded into a GREAT Attitude!

Observing More Than Numbers
Today is 1-11-11, not sure what the number means… but it is interesting to see when you write it. And there are more this year: 2-11-2011, 11-11-11… 11-20-2011… what a year for numbers. Maybe if luck has it… it might be time to play the lottery. More numbers today include the inches and feet of snow due to blanket the northeast. The time the storm is to hit and the time is will stop snowing.
How often do we think of these numbers – unusual as they may seem – in our daily life? As we speed along in the New Year, numbers are probably the furthest from anyone’s mind. Any more numbers to think about? How about the visa bill balance from holiday shopping? Maybe that hasn’t arrived in the mail yet… it will. What is your lucky number? What does it add up to? And do you recognize your lucky number when dialing a phone number, writing a check or paying by credit card at the store?
Numbers encourage observation skills, something we often overlook. However, with enhanced observation skills, we become more aware of our surroundings at any given moment – heighten awareness as I like to call it. How important are observation skills? Ever notice what a co-worker wore yesterday? The color of a car that pulled up next to you at a traffic light? Or the color tie of a TV announcer?
Observation skills go beyond seeing what is right in front of you. It is really seeing – more. If you sit and stare at a lamp shade (you may not see anything but the lamp shade – initially, but in time, you will notice the folds of the shade, specks of dust or the way the light extends from the lit lamp. Observation skills add a varied dimension to life beyond our daily routine and opens up a whole new avenue to explore.
Tomorrow, when you are searching for your car in the parking lot, notice the other cars and the color of the cars. Are there any cars that are red or yellow? Any colors that stand out from the other cars parked row by row? If you look, really look at something, you will see more than what meets the eye. It takes practice, but with practice, guaranteed you will see a red car and say “wow, there goes a red car.”
As silly as this sounds, start looking and see more… you just might find more than you expected – in numbers and in life. Keep Warm if you live in the snowy Northeast or anywhere else that’s getting snow!
In the Spirit of Love and Light
Warmest Regards,
Rosemary Augustine
Happy New Year!
As the last few hours of 2010 close upon us, here are a few things to write about in your journal:
- What was your big accomplishment this year?
- What was your biggest blunder, and most importantly, what did you learn from it?
- What new ideas were sparked and implemented?
- What did you miss seeing only because of lack of observation at the time?
- What did you give up and how do you feel about it?
- What did you do to improve your life?
- What did you create this year?
- Who or what was nurtured by you this year?
- What changed in your life – expected or unexpected?
- What did you accept this year – willingly or otherwise?
So as we move into 2011… let go of 2010 and embrace the new year, a new decade, and a chance to make this year better than all the previous ones. Remember, it’s your choice.
Wishing you a Very Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year! And remember, continue to write, journal, play and create. Your input is a necessary part of the Universe.
Warmest Regards,
Rosemary Augustine

Giving Thanks – Before and After
This blog was delayed a week because of the Yahoo email glitch (spammed), yet giving it a theme of “Before and After” seemed to work best throughout! Thanks for your patience.
There’s a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving…. Health, family, work… and more. The real meaning of thanksgiving to me is giving thanks to those who mean the most to us and to those who have made a difference in our lives. The much over used word of gratitude extends even more when you are faced with simple interruptions that take you away from what is really important.
Last Saturday, I learned my Yahoo email account had been compromised (emails to everyone in my address book). My Yahoo account is one that I pay a yearly fee for use with no ads. An account that has at least 10 other email addresses forward to it (from 3 websites) adding to the simplified or more like complication of life. With all the passwords and tight security, makes you wonder since my personal computer is like going through a TSA line at the airport. However, a brief hour at the public library on their wireless connection is the only place I could have been exposed. Talk about germs! That exposure has cost me hours of work, hours that right now (the weekend before Thanksgiving) I don’t have. So I ran a full scan on my computer, changed my password and deleted my address book in yahoo. And, I thought, “what is really important to me right now?” So much came up that took precedence at that moment, I realized that email, although important, could wait. I made a quick list of things to change and then left to enjoy the rest of my day.
As we approach Thanksgiving, life often gives us different perspectives considering all that is going on around you, me and the rest of the world. Family and friends rally together this time of year. And although my family is small, we celebrate giving thanks for our health and ability to continue despite the world conditions. I’ve been very lucky this year, since turning 60 in September, I continue to have my health, energy and have been able to work full time throughout this crazy economic time. My friends have been a beacon for me in good times and bad regardless of miles between us. My home and kitties offer me a grounding place to recharge and just BE – daily. My mom, who turns 97 in February, continues to be in good spirits. And, she’s grateful for her ability to continue to live independently! So when these glitches with email and computer viruses invade your space, taking a step back for a day, a week or even longer, makes you realize that life still goes on even if the email isn’t coming in at breakneck speed.
…..
It’s now been a week since the yahoo email debacle. I still have 100 more places to change my email address and 27 different subscriptions that have to be re-applied for at the website, since those 27 don’t allow you to manage your account at the bottom of the ezine. However, I celebrated Thanksgiving and remembered all who have touched my life in some way or another. I continue to really address, “what is really important to me… no… REALLY important – right now today, this month, this year or next? So with this constant reminder of change (leaving Yahoo) and how good it is for us, it also can suck up time if the change is not constructive costing productivity to drop considerably.
That’s when the daily list of priorities kicks in… That list of priorities is what’s really important to me and has brought me back to memory at times like these. I call it my “5 Daily Do’s: walk, eat healthy, write/journal, be creative and connect with a family member or friend.” When you zero down on the important things in life, a Yahoo email glitch suddenly goes far off the radar screen. Realizing this, if you don’t write down all the places that need address changes, you may forget half of them a few weeks later. You may also realize a few week later how unimportant some of those addresses really are.
Thanksgiving is also a time for “turning”. Turning of seasons, turning of time and turning a new leaf as we approach a new year. Giving thanks for all you have and all that is yet to come. A time for giving to others without the expectation of something in return. As we approach the month of December, we begin to recognize everyone we know with a holiday card or gift. We race around to attend holiday parties, sometimes more than one in a night. We’re busy with menus and baking, decorating trees and putting up lights. All for the sake of what? To celebrate Christmas? Yet had we given thanks in November – at Thanksgiving – to all those who are important in our life… Christmas would then have the true meaning of the birth of Christ rather than another holiday to get presents and eat big meals. Thanksgiving in its true sense – giving thanks for everything that has or will come into your life – good or bad. Giving thanks for all your challenges and difficult relationships in your life as they mold your character into understanding and forgiving. Giving thanks for the little things and the things we overlook. Giving thanks for the things that we think less important but are very important to others. Giving thanks for the things we take for granted – like the air we breathe and the water we drink. Thanksgiving – Giving Thanks Before and After… I may still have a lot of work to do in transferring all my “stuff” to a new email account. However, my first order of business is gratitude for my life … and then my daily priorities (remember my 5 Daily Do’s?) . These take precedence – everyday!
Hope your Thanksgiving was truly about giving thanks.

P.S. Let me know if I forgot something 🙂
Finding Joy in Your Sketch Journal
The purpose of this blog is to write about something that inspires you and me and anyone else that wants an ounce or more of creativity in our daily chaotic world. Why do you journal? For the fun of it? For the daily rhythm it provides? Or for the clarity that your soul seeks? What kind of journal do you use — a lined or blank paper journal… Sketch journal… Scraps of paper later taped to pages? Most importantly, what do you write about when you journal? Do you write about love, relationships, gratitude or health? What motivates you to journal on a regular basis? And what drives you to return to your journal when you have let the dust settle on its pages for weeks or months? Obviously, these are some things to journal about.
Last week, my best friend and business cohort, Anita Larson (http://www.arthonoringlife.com/) asked me to think about and then write a blog post about the different kinds of journals. I immediately thought about why people journal – and came up with the answer, “obviously they write for different reasons.” And then I thought about the kinds of journals. Oh my… in just a few minutes I came up with over 85 different kinds of journals you could write or use as part of your fun, rhythm and clarity. I won’t bore you with the 85+ types of journals that I listed last Thursday night in my journal, since it will give me an opportunity to provide you with more blog posts in the future – about journaling! Since I have been creating hand-crafted journals, writing about journaling, journaling myself and teaching classes and courses on the subject, I know there are many kinds of journals and many reasons for journaling.
When I wrote my 2nd book, “How To Live and Work Your Passion,” I designed the chapters so that you would journal your thoughts on numerous prompts centered around finding your passion, identifying your blocks of why you don’t live your passion and understanding what it means to truly live and work your passion – everyday! When I returned to my roots in 2001 and faced the challenges of the northeast culture (after living in Colorado for 20 years), journaling got me through many rough days and months that have now turned to the last 10 years of my life! Journaling became important to me, so much that when I moved to Pennsylvania, I purchased personalized license plates that say “JOURNAL.” Often people will ask me, what is the meaning of your license plates? My response today (and the day I ordered them) is, “to remind myself to journal everyday and to inspire others to do the same.”
For years I did morning pages, wrote during the day, jotted words that triggered a thought or inspired me to expand on an idea. Many nights I wrote in my gratitude journal (doesn’t everyone do this?), I kept a food journal (identifying food sensitivities and allergies) and a business journal filled with mind mapping; I have a special journal for writing ideas and article/newsletter and/or book titles. I always have a sketch journal in the works, since that is how I personally perfect my day via art. But the one journal that holds near and dear to my heart is my Joy Journal.
For years I wrote about happiness – defining it, identifying it, understanding what it really means to be “in the moment.” When I discovered it was joy that I was seeking and not happiness, I started a Joy Journal. It’s a small, wire bound book with a beautiful rose on the cover. Only measuring 5”x5” with lined paper, the entries have a very special meaning in my life. Therefore, my entries are not daily. My first entry was the inscription on the inside cover that reads, “Joy – a will of my soul and an act of my heart.” Periodically, I will read through my Joy Journal entries. I read these entries more than any other journal I have ever kept.
Sometimes, inspiration is a tall order. And the act of journaling can be overwhelming for some. I’m hoping this post will inspire you to create a special journal for yourself. Maybe it’s a “Joy” journal like mine, or maybe it’s a “Travel” journal – a special place that you write about your travels thus far and the places you hope to visit one day. Or … possibly it is a “Sketch” journal that captures your day in pictures. My recent hand-crafted Journals lends the opportunity to capture your day in words or pictures, sketching using pen, pencil or paint. I always carry a sketch journal with me and have pencil or pen handy no matter where I am. For short trips away from home, I also like to carry watercolor crayons, since I can use a small brush and a little water sitting in my car or on a bench. A Sketch Journal can be an absolute delight – sheer joy in the true sense – regardless of your skill level. Focus on your subject and sketch away… write a few captions… journal your thoughts… draw your emotions… Sketch and experience Joy! Hopefully, this post inspires you to create a few artistic endeavors through words, pictures or thoughts.

Driving In the Fast Lane While Looking for a Rest Stop!
We are less than 60 days from the Christmas holidays… 58 days to be exact. And the buzz is already starting. With Halloween lurking in the shadow of sunset, (and as soon as all the candy is collected), moms across the country will be looking for ways to recycle the bags of treats. What to do with all that sugar? Meanwhile, it’s time to put up the Christmas lights (even though you may not turn them on until December) and certainly time to create a menu for both Thanksgiving and Christmas, and all the other holidays before and after – Chanukkah, Winter Solstice, Christmas Eve, New Years Eve, New Years Day, Kwanza, Boxing Day… oh my, how many more days can we celebrate – with food and family? Should I scream now? Or wait until January 2? Each year I wonder if I’m even going to make it to January 2nd.
While shopping last weekend at the local grocery store I noticed the amount of people and more importantly the amount of food in their shopping basket. Hmmmmm! are they preparing for the holidays already? I asked a lady in front of me while waiting in line and she said, “oh yes! We have 2 freezers and we’re already baking and cooking to make our lives easier.” I thought she was cooking for an army and asked how big her family is and she said, oh there is only 6 of us and a few drop ins so maybe when it’s all done… we might have 20-25 people.” A few drop ins? Holy turkey stuffing! maybe 20 drop ins? So I went home to make a list of the dinners I was preparing, their menus and the food I needed to add to my shopping list for next week. Oh my, I suddenly thought, who am I cooking for? It’s just me! And the cats – and they are happy with turkey and giblets out of a can (and really don’t know the difference that it’s a holiday or any other day). Then I thought, gee, I already made reservations at the restaurant for Thanksgiving – for 2 and Christmas… well, only the cats will know if I’m really home.
What about house cleaning – the key question here is do you clean before or after the parties? I know some people who thoroughly clean before and then complain about the mess they have to clean up after. Will guests really notice? What they will notice is the obvious – dust on the shelves and mold in the bathtub. No your guest are not coming to take a shower, but I can tell you many people have told me when they go to someone’s house and they use the bathroom, they look in the shower to see how clean it is. Maybe you can trick your guests into thinking you are the perfect housekeeper by only letting them use the bathroom with a shower or tub that no one uses. The best would be letting them use the bathroom with no shower or tub at all.
And, Oh wait! Then there are holiday cards or how I like to call them Christmas Cards. Are you sending cards this year? Is there a family photo or standard bought card at your favorite dollar store? Gee, that’s another list to compile, write, stamp, lick and head to the post office for drop off. Unless you give them to your husband to drop at work in the outgoing mail – only to find them in his briefcase on December 29th. Guess I should be considering my Christmas card list, but I’m busy with this blog and making items to sell on Etsy!
Are we driving in the fast lane yet? Let’s talk about delegation. It is important this time of year to be more a project manager and delegate as much as you can, oversee what’s being done (letting go of perfection), and make the cookies or candy that bring you joy and delegate the rest. Kids and spouses, plus friends or neighbors with a side business, ask for help, keep asking and delegate various assignments including the Christmas Card list. You may have a neighbor or unemployed friend that has decided to make a few bucks and offer this service. Use them! I guarantee you are now entering the on ramp to a speed trap of year-end holiday madness. Ever wonder why they call it “madness?” Ever notice how that madness all disappears completely by a certain date? Usually somewhere between December 26th – December 29th. By then what didn’t get done, really doesn’t matter.
Another thing to think about for the holidays is simplification. We try to simplify other times of the year, why can’t we simplify now? So many people want everything to be so perfect – perfect meal, perfect gift, perfect life… Give up perfect! Perfect and Simple are not compatible partners. Choose one and decide how your holidays will be enjoyable and memorable. Remember, what you didn’t get right or perfect this year, you’ll have a chance to try it again in another 365 Days! Meanwhile, try to simplify. What does simplify mean to me? It means: The Christmas lights have been up since the summer; Reservations for Thanksgiving Dinner; A simple meal for Christmas with a best friend; Christmas Cards? Well, I always say I’m not sending, but I do – and I include my annual update. I’m sure I’ll make a few pumpkin pies too. Meanwhile, I’m going to include Rest Stops along the highway since, the speed at which we are all going this time of the year requires a lot more rest than normal. Enjoy the journey since it’s never about the destination.
In the Spirit of Love and Light…
And Happy Pumpkin Day!

Your Visualizing Tool
Some people say journaling is hard. I have to say that the writing comes easy, it’s making the journal book itself that is certainly a challenge. I’ve been involved in making journals since last April, when I attended the Artiscape in Columbus OH and came home with a leather bound journal and lots of fresh ideas on making all kinds of journals. I’ve made about 15 and gave many away… They are beautiful and there are only so many that can be gifts since not all my friends journal! Oh my!!!!
I guess it was a few years ago that I bought a book on how to make journals and various decorative covers and gifts. It was really hard then, since I had no clue what I was doing…. Now… well, I’m no expert, but I understand some of the book binding terms and know the difference between a leaf, a signature and an end page and the purpose of waxed linen thread.
I’ve developed an opportunity to mix two loves here! Since I love journals and journal writing – I guess you could call me a Journal Aficionado. And I also love beads! I buy journals and I make them, I decorate them with fabric and beads and create art inside them as well as write secrets, ideas and plans. Sometimes I have several different journals going at once. As long as I date the page so I know when I wrote it, I guess it really doesn’t matter which journal book it’s written in. I have journals that date back decades. Yes I keep them and often go back and read, to see that I’ve grown (or still stuck) – it depends on the topic.
Last night I was up until 1:30 am finishing up 2 beautiful journals (shown above) that will be available for sale soon. I was so caught up in my creativity, I had no idea what time it was, I just knew the cats were making a fuss, because it was way past their bedtime. 🙂 With my current day job, I get up around 7am, and this morning I was a little groggy. However, I was energized because of my completed artistic projects the night before since that I had envisioned the finished piece when they were just a raw piece of cardboard and material.
Which brings me to the topic of this blog… Visualization. Journaling is a written form of visualization. But visualization is an important part of creating your future, the things you want and where you want to go. Even Steven Covey says “begin with an end in mind.” Looking at a piece of cardboard and visualizing it as a journal – decorated with fabric, ribbon and beads says something about my visualization process. Now let’s see if I can put those visualization techniques to work in other aspects of my life…. Hmmmmmmm ! Journal on your visualization process. If you’re not familiar with visualizing, Shakti Gwan has several books on the subject athat are excellent. Visit her at: http://www.shaktigawain.com/…
Meanwhile, stay tuned for more creative thoughts… since I’m headed to a few art galleries tonight and goodness knows what creative sparks that will inspire.
