The Secret Staircase is a story about an orange tabby cat named Milo who dreams of escape.  And, when he finally does escape, has many adventures with other neighborhood animals.  His rival, Big Grey arrives on the scene and threatens Milo.  And through all this, his human never has a clue that Milo is gone since he learns the secret staircase is not visible to the human eye.

Milo’s sidekick, RoseBud helps Milo stay grounded when escape becomes too dangerous, or when their human will learn they are missing.  Initially wanting to see the neighbor’s garden, Milo seeks an encounter with an alligator and is witness to RoseBud almost being killed by a hawk.
